Cies Islands objective: UNESCO Global Geopark

Designing a logo that changes colors throughout the day

Designing the logo for the beautiful Cíes Islands, a natural paradise in Vigo, northern Spain, was a truly immersive experience. The goal is to have UNESCO recognize the Cíes Islands as a World Geological Heritage site.

We had the pleasure of working closely with experts and representatives from various fields, including Geology, Oceanography, Geochemistry, Anthropology, Sedimentology, Archaeology, and Geography, from the University of Vigo, Universidad de Santiago, ICSEM, Vigo Tourism Council, and Vigo Council.

The logo aims to capture the essence of the Geopark concept, with a special focus on the shapes of the island’s rocks. We included a sun to suggest the geographic location of the Geopark and the unique interaction between sunlight and rock formations. The logo’s eye-like shape invites viewers to observe and appreciate the island’s rock shapes and textures, emphasizing its scientific and educational significance. Additionally, color palettes representing different times of day showcase how these rock formations shift and transform under changing light, highlighting their diversity and beauty.

The Cies Islands are located in Vigo, (Spain) and you can visit them (and even camp there) by booking in advance.

As a curiosity, the beach at Cies Islands was awarded ‘best beach in the world’ by The Guardian in 2022.
